5 Reasons Why London’s ‘Cat Café’ is the Best Idea Ever

April 5, 2014 at 7:17 pm

Cream? Sugar? Cat? These are all things you can have with your coffee at Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium in east London. The cafe offers 11 cats to pet along with standard dining fare such as tea and pastries. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for cat lovers it doesn’t get much better than this and here’s why…

1.     The café offers a sanctuary for soon to be homeless cats. All 11 residents were donated by people leaving the country who could no longer look after them. Lady Dinah’s plans to rescue more kitties in the future which will free up space in local shelters.

2.   The only thing better than curling up with a good book, is curling up next to a kitten. These feline friends offer therapy for lonely or anxious customers and studies have shown cats will remember kindness shown to them and return the favor later.

3.     They offer stressed out city folk a unique way to unwind. Many people in the city live in small flats and are unable to keep pets, but want a little bit of relaxing animal attention.

4.   Several studies have shown that cats provide an abundance of health benefits. One study found that over a ten year period cat owners were 30 percent less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners.

5.    Last but not least, who wouldn’t want to see stuff like this in real life, whenever they please?!

American animal-lovers won’t be missing out for much longer. Two cat cafes are due to open in the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of 2014.

Drinking Coffee Linked to Longer, Healthier Lives

April 5, 2014 at 5:52 pm

Not only will coffee keep you lively on a Monday morning but the drink may also help you live longer. Several massive studies have now shown that the people who drink the most coffee have a reduced risk for many diseases resulting in longer, healthier lives for those drinkers.

Coffee is a Major Source of Antioxidants

Coffee is filled with an abundance of antioxidants that protect our bodies from oxidation, which involves free radicals that damage molecules in the body.

Oxidation is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and common diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Coffee, believe it or not, happens to be the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables… COMBINED.

Numbers Don’t Lie

There are several studies showing that when people drink coffee, they have a lower risk of dying from a range of serious diseases.

A groundbreaking study, the largest of its kind, was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2012.

Let us break it down for you –

  • Over 400K individuals between the ages of 50 and 71 were questioned on their coffee consumption.
  • These individuals were followed for 12+ years. The results were fairly remarkable… the more coffee people drank, the lower their risk of death was.
  • The sweet spot seems to be at 4-5 cups per day, where men had a 12% reduced risk and women a 16% reduced risk. Drinking 6 or more cups per day provided no additional benefit.
  • However, even moderate consumption of coffee (1 cup per day) was associated with a 5-6% reduction in risk of death, showing that even a little bit is enough to have an effect.
  • Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from infections, injuries and accidents, respiratory disease, diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
  • The benefit does not appear to be attributable to the caffeine, because both decaf and regular coffee had the same effect.

Of course, this is a so-called observational study, which can not prove that coffee caused the reduction in risk. But it is a good reassurance that coffee is, at the very least, NOT the villain it has been made out to be.

There are also studies from Harvard showing that coffee may make you happier, reducing the risk of depression by by 20% and the risk of suicide by 53%.

Coffee is Super Healthy

Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, which actually contains a decent amount of vitamins and minerals including Vitamins B5 and B2 plus Potassium and Maganese.

Caffeine is one of the very few natural substances that have actually been proven to aid fat burning.

Several studies show that caffeine can boost the metabolic rate by 3-11%.

Other studies show that caffeine can specifically increase the burning of fat, by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in lean people.

Bottom line: Drink coffee, live a longer, healthier life.

January 23, 2014 at 10:13 pm

As many of you know, we are dog lovers at the Cafe, with our Rhodesian Ridgeback, Marley, as our unofficial cafe mascot. Marley was with us every step of the way, often hanging out with the construction crews as we readied the space for our grand opening.

We are excited to team up with Maranatha Farm to support all the noble work they do to rescue and find homes for animals. They are 501(c)(3) organization that describe themselves as: “A small group responding to a need for compassionate care of injured and mistreated animals. We have two small farms devoted to rehabilitation of animals, and can accept anything from horses to hamsters. We accept and work with all breeds. We have limited facility for cats/kittens, but can usually find fosters.”

So come on out and join us for lunch Saturday. We can’t wait to meet your pooches!

Pet owners are also encouraged to bring their own chairs and water bowls to hang out in the parking lot which will be blocked off as well.

“Even if you haven’t adopted from Maranatha Farm, still stop by and learn about the work our rescue does in the community,” Karen Smith of Maranatha Farm says.

Hausman and his wife Annette, who also works at the cafe behind the counter as well as the back office, have always owned pets, including the cafe’s unofficial mascot, Marley, a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Coffee making in progress

Big shout-out to The Island Packet, which featured us a few weeks ago and interviewed some of our early fans. Here’s a snippet of the article:

“McMullen said the coffee was delicious, and Jennings, who had just moved to Sun City Hilton Head the day before, enjoyed the indulgence of the homemade coffee cake.

“We’ve been out shopping at Publix, Walmart and Food Lion, so this is a real pleasure,” Jennings said.

They had been served by Michael Hausman, who along with Dr. Ken Farr is a partner with Dr. Ken Farr of Palmetto Eye Specialist, opened the cafe on Sept. 23.”
