Kids Try Coffee For The First Time – VIDEO

May 13, 2014 at 6:17 pm

As adults, it’s kind of hard to comprehend that there are some people in this world who don’t need coffee on a daily basis in order to function properly, let alone individuals who can’t stand the taste in general. Now, maybe you came out of the womb taking your coffee black, but everyone we know had to ease their way into liking it. Extra sugar and cream always helped things go down a little easier.

We recently stumbled upon this video made by Huffington Post that features kids sampling their very first taste of coffee. They were given it black, and for their parents’ sake, decaffeinated. Their reactions are priceless.

We’d like to talk to these kids again in 10 years and see if their response towards free coffee is still “YUCK” and “Take it away!”. We’re thinking their feedback might be slightly different.

Have you ever had your children sip your morning cup of Joe? What was your first experience with this magical drink?

A Cup A Day To Keep Retinal Damage Away

It seems as if each passing week scientists discover another health benefit of everyone’s favorite caffeinated drink, coffee. Their most recent research concludes that aside from an energy jolt, coffee may prevent deteriorating eyesight and retinal degeneration due to glaucoma, aging and diabetes.

The key to this discovery lies in the chlorogenic acid (CLA), a strong antioxidant found in your cup of Joe.  A Cornell study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry back in December found that when they pretreated mice with CLA, they developed no retinal damage after they were given doses of nitric oxide.

The retinal itself is a thin tissue layer on the inside, back wall of the eye that receives and organizes visual information. Retinal degeneration is a result of oxidative stress and free radicals due to a lack of oxygen. With the information discovered by scientists, they can take research to the next step to determine whether drinking coffee facilitates CLA to cross a membrane known as the blood—retinal barrier. Once this is proven, doctors may one day recommend an appropriate brew to prevent retinal damage.

Want Your Employees To Be More Ethical? Give Them Coffee.

May 13, 2014 at 6:07 pm

*Cue bosses loading the kitchenette cabinets with bags of coffee – a new study suggests that the stimulant helps keep employees honest.

According from a new research from Journal of Applied Psychology, just two cups of caffeinated coffee can aid sleep-deprived workers in resisting the unethical influence of other employees.

David Welsh, co-author of the report, explains that it takes less effort to go along with an unethical behavior when you’re sleep-deprived but caffeine can give these individuals extra energy to resist this behavior.

Here’s what happened –

Volunteers for the study were put into situations where they were encouraged to go along with a lie in order to earn extra money. All participants were kept awake the night prior, however half of them chewed gum that contained 200 milligrams of caffeine – the amount found in two cups of coffee. Those who had chewed the caffeinated gum were more likely to resist the situation while the others were more than willing to go along.

All in all, the unethical behaviors were a result of lack of sleep. However, with employees working longer hours and getting less sleep, employers need to realize that the results aren’t always positive for the company or the individual. By providing caffeine in the workplace as well as implementing overtime restrictions, these behaviors can be avoided.
