The International Journal of Sport and Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism conducted a recent study that found when trained athletes took caffeine roughly 12 ounces of brewed coffee prior to their exercise routine, they burned about 15% more calories for three hours post-exercise.

2. Coffee accelerates fat loss.

When consuming coffee before exercise, fat cells are used as an energy source as opposed to glycogen. In addition, high amounts of caffeine can increase your metabolism and act as an appetite suppressant, making you consume less overall.

4. Drinking coffee can increase performance.

Sports Medicine published a report that suggest that after caffeine consumption, athletes can “train at a greater power output and/or train longer”. Need more proof? The British Journal of Sports Science found that subjects ran 4.2 seconds faster during a 1500-meter treadmill run than those who did not consume coffee before running.

4. Coffee can decrease muscle pain.

By drinking coffee prior to your workout, you can complete more reps at a higher resistance during your weight training sessions and run faster and longer during cardio workouts according to a study at University of Illinois.

6. Coffee can aid in muscle preservation.

Sports scientists at Coventry university found that caffeine helped offset the lose of muscle strength that occurs with aging. The results indicate that in moderation, caffeine may help preserve overall fitness and reduce the risk of age-related injuries.
